BKK has expanded the MOL Bubi public bicycle-sharing system with three more stations. Thanks to the developments, users now have access to new stations in Újbuda and next to the Aréna Mall shopping centre.
It's a busy end of the year for the MOL Bubi team: a station was recently opened in the office corridor between Boráros tér and Rákóczi híd, one in the Lőportárdűlő neighbourhood in District 13, and now two new ones in Újbuda and one next to a shopping mall have been added to the system.
Thanks to the cooperation with the Municipality of District 11, green public bikes will now also be available at Bornemissza tér and at the intersection of Fehérvári út and Andor utca. The district has excellent cycling facilities and shared bikes are very popular in the area. Most of the residential areas offer easy terrain for cycling due to low gradients, and the extensive network makes almost the whole of Újbuda bikeable.
Also, a new station has been opened next to the Aréna Mall shopping centre, making it easier for people to get there for some Christmas shopping.
MOL Bubi celebrates its anniversary this year
The distinctive green bikes have been part of Budapest's cityscape for ten years, since 2014, just like the yellow trams. From an initial fleet of 1,100, there are now 2,460 bikes in the Hungarian capital, and the number of users and stations has increased significantly in recent years. The MOL-New Europe Foundation is providing financial support to finance the improvements.
The new era of the public transport system will begin in 2026: with Bubi 3.0, the current fleet is expected to double, and not only conventional but also e-bikes will be available. The new fleet and stations are planned to be located in neighbourhoods beyond the current service area.
