BKK is adding new stations to the MOL Bubi public bicycle-sharing system. Thanks to the developments, which affects several districts, the system coverage will be further improved and it will be even more convenient to use the MOL Bubi, which is ten years old this year.
The development of the MOL Bubi public bike system continues in the cooler weather, with new stations available for cyclists from the beginning of December. Santa Claus has brought MOL Bubi bikes to the Lechner Ödön fasor in District 9, and the new station, built with the support of K&H Bank, opened on Friday, 6 December. Thanks to the development on the office corridor between Boráros tér and Rákóczi híd, the accessibility of the public transport system will be further improved, and the new station now forms an integral part of the stations inaugurated during Mobility Week 2023. Another important green bike event in the District 9 is the reopening of the station at the Pöttyös utca metro station, giving people living in the József Attila residential area more opportunities to hop on a bike.
Also from 6 December, the new station at the intersection of Lőportár utca and Kassák Lajos utca in District 13 has been open. Following earlier public consultations, the public bicycle coverage of the Lőportárdűlő neighbourhood will be further extended. Residents and workers have also indicated in the Community Budget that they would welcome the addition of a new MOL Bubi station in the area.
Thanks to the cooperation with the Municipality of District 11, green public bikes will soon be available at Bornemissza tér and at the intersection of Fehérvári út and Andor utca.
A new bike station is planned to be opened next to the Aréna Mall shopping centre this year, making it easier for people to get ready for Christmas.
Winter operation has started
November saw the start of MOL Bubi's winter operations, with the start of a thorough servicing of the bicycles. The annual comprehensive maintenance until 28 February 2025 will temporarily reduce the number of bikes available to users, but there will always be enough bikes available at the stations.
In addition to regular and routine servicing throughout the year, the high use of bicycles makes it necessary to give them an even more rigorous overhaul in winter. BKK and its operating partner, Csepel Kerékpárgyártó Zrt., will jointly inspect the entire fleet in the coming weeks to repair and, if necessary, replace the necessary parts.
Ten years of green bikes for the people of Budapest and visitors
The distinctive green bikes have been part of Budapest's cityscape for ten years, since 2014, just like the yellow trams. From an initial fleet of 1,100, there are now 2,460 bikes in the capital, but the number of users and stations has also increased significantly in recent years. The MOL-New Europe Foundation is providing financial support to finance the improvements.
