Budapest, 3 July 2023 –
The MOL Bubi bike fleet, Budapest’s popular bike service is expanding again with 200 brand new bikes. Thanks to this expansion, over circa 2,500 bikes and 196 docking stations are at the disposal of passengers getting about in the Hungarian capital.
BKK Centre for Budapest Transport significantly expands the vehicle fleet of the MOL Bubi public bike system. After the opening of the new docking stations to be found in Zugló (district 14), the system is expanding also with 200 brand new bikes. Some of the brand new bikes are already on the streets and within days a total of 2,460 bikes will be available to customers.
The number of MOL Bubi users is continuously on the rise
The reason why BKK has made a decision about the development of the bike fleet again is that the use of the public bike service has been continuously increasing since the system renewal process taken place in 2021. Users refer unambiguously to the expansion of the bike fleet as the most important need. The company has put a total of 1,260 brand new MOL Bubi bikes into operation since May, 2021, that is, the company has more than doubled the number of the current bike fleet.
The bike fleet system breaks newer and newer records in every season of the year. In the winter season the monthly and average use of the MOL Bubi system increased by 60-70% compared to the former similar period. In May, MOL Bubi was used already the five millionth time. This June the monthly total passenger number broke records, as during one month there were over 389,000 trips taken by the public bike system.
More docking stations, easier use
Based on customers’ feedbacks, BKK develops the MOL Bubi service on a continuous basis. The company expanded the system the fourth time: last time the system was expanded in Zugló. Previously, developments were made in districts 6 and 8, in the City Park and in Óbuda, thus customers can pick up and drop off the bikes at 196 docking stations.
BKK made the app more user-friendly, made registration easier and provides more state-of-the-art bikes in the system. Due to the continuous development, more and more passengers can use the bikes.
The reason why the new bikes are necessary is that BKK could expand its service area. Thanks to this development, the service was expanded with the new docking stations in Zugló. The company currently makes negotiations with different city halls about future developments.
