In view of the extreme weather conditions experienced in recent weeks, BKK Centre for Budapest Transport is extending the Bubi pilot period: the test will last until 5 March 2026, during which time the service can be used with existing Pilot Passes, but it will also be possible to purchase new passes and cycle on a pay-as-you-go basis. During the test period, BKK will continue to work on the introduction of the third generation of Bubi; the new bikes are scheduled to appear on the streets of Budapest in June at the latest.
In December 2025, BKK launched a pilot period following the end of the second generation of Bubi with the aim of examining the usage habits of Bubi users in District 6 with the involvement of Mobi-points. These standardised urban micromobility points will make it possible to pick up and drop off bikes in more locations in the new generation of Bubi, and will also allow scooters and other micromobility devices to be dropped off at these stations in addition to bikes. BKK analyses the data on the use of Mobi-points anonymously in order to better understand user needs, optimise the network, and prepare for the introduction of the new Bubi as efficiently as possible. However, the extreme weather conditions experienced in the past month have not allowed for the collection of sufficient data, so BKK is extending the pilot period until 5 March 2026.
You can still use Bubi at a favourable price
Those who already have a Bubi Pilot Pass can use the service with their existing pass until the end of the pilot period. In addition, new passes can be purchased (the product provides 30 minutes of cycling for each rental for 500 HUF and are valid until the end of the pilot period, regardless of the date of purchase), and pay-as-you-go usage will also remain available.
During the extended period, the system will operate with a reduced fleet of nearly 1,000 bicycles, but BKK's goal remains the same: to gather as much experience as possible before the launch of the next generation of Bubi.
The new Bubi is coming soon
The mobility manager company is working hard on the launch of the next generation of Bubi, for which it signed a contract with a new service provider last year. The new system represents a step forward in every respect: a fleet of new bicycles, much larger and flexibly expandable than the current one, will be available to users.
With the new generation of Bubi, the number of bikes will also increase significantly: in the initial period, the new system will provide a total of 3,300 bikes (2,500 mechanical and 800 e-bikes). Over time, at least 5,000 brand new bikes will be available, and the service will be extended beyond the current service area to cover all important transport hubs with a minimum of 30,000 trips, i.e. all metro stations. The aim of the electrically assisted bicycles is to serve a wider range of users. To reach customers for whom the Bubi service has not been a realistic alternative for some reason, but who can now choose it with confidence.
The new service will later be extended to other parts of the city, such as Örs vezér tere, Kőbánya-Kispest, Újpest-Városkapu, the József Attila housing estate, Angyalföld, Zugló, and Őrmező. What's more, the bikes will also be available for pick-up and drop-off at Mobi-points.
The new generation of Bubi will be launched by 22 June 2026, at the latest, but BKK and its service provider are also looking into the possibility of early delivery so that people in Budapest can use an even better, more easily accessible service as soon as possible.
In the spring months, until the introduction of the new Bubi, BKK recommends the use of public transport and other sustainable and shared forms of transport, and supports private service providers operating in Budapest that offer alternative solutions.
