MOL Bubi public bike-sharing service expands further in Kelenföld
Five new MOL Bubi bike stations have been added to the public bicycle service in the 11th district, Kelenföld and Lágymányos, making the extremely popular, distinctive green bicycles available at 207 locations across the city. The aim of the development is to make MOL Bubi available in new areas, to encourage people in the capital to use public bikes and to encourage more and more people to choose cycling, even in combination with public transport.
BKK Centre for Budapest Transport has added five new stations to its MOL Bubi network in the 11th district. The development was made possible after a public consultation process and with the cooperation of the district's local government. With the new bike stations, MOL Bubi bicycles are now available at 207 locations throughout the city.
The new stations were built by BKK at the following locations in District 11:
MOL Bubi is now available at 36 locations in District 11, providing bicycle access to popular outdoor entertainment venues in the district. The new Hengermalom út-Budafoki út station has become the southernmost point of the service area. BKK will continue to investigate which parts of the city should be served by new stations to ensure that as many people as possible have easy access to a fast, convenient and healthy mobility option.
Many small steps towards sustainable transport
The new stations of the public bike-sharing service were handed over to the public at a press event in the capital, where Bendegúz Kovács, Head of Social Relations and spokesperson of BKK, said, "BKK, in close cooperation with the Municipality of Budapest and the districts concerned, is trying to create the conditions for passengers to always choose the most suitable means of transport. Many small, coordinated steps are being taken to achieve sustainable transport: the developments will contribute to making our capital more liveable and more people- and environment-friendly, so that more and more people can choose to cycle and use shared services, even in combination with public transport."
More and more people ride Bubi bikes every year
MOL Bubi has been growing in popularity for years: the latest BKK summary for last year shows that in 2023, people in Budapest used the public bike service more than 3.4 million times, covering a total of nearly 7 million kilometres. Since the launch of the new MOL Bubi on 20 May 2021, more than 8 million journeys have been made on bicycles. The huge interest is reflected in the orders of magnitude improvement in utilisation levels compared to the period before the renewal: 10 times more people chose MOL Bubi last year compared to the last full year of the previous scheme (2019).
Every year, more and more stations are available to users. In September last year, during Mobility Week, the number of MOL Bubi stations reached 200, and this spring a station was opened at 20 Váci út in District 13, with the help of EY (formerly Ernst & Young).
